Chalk Paint Countertop

You may have heard that I went a little wild yesterday and painted over my ugly laminate countertop with chalk paint. I know. I'm such a rebel, aren't I? Well, I'm back to tell you that I didn't have any regrets in the morning :)

The second coat of wax is drying on the countertop as I write this post. It seems pretty well-sealed at the moment, but I'll be sure to let you know how it stands up to real-life use and abuse.

The rim around the sink area was very difficult to paint. I'm going to replace the faucet, so I'll paint and wax that area better when the old faucet comes out.

Hopefully these photos are more pleasing to the eye now that I've reattached the cabinet doors.

I'm looking forward to picking out some fun new knobs. I'd also like to put a fabric skirt around the end of the countertop so I can hide the dog food underneath it. I'll be looking for suggestions on how to do that from some of you amazing seamstresses.

I love the new color of the cabinet, and I wish I could be painting the upper cabinets right now. However, we're taking a mini-vacation this weekend and I need to actually use the laundry room for its intended purpose. Piles of dirty clothes are calling out to me!

I'll be back with updated photos and a little tutorial on painting cabinetry next week!

Thanks so much for stopping by and for leaving such sweet comments! You're the best :)

  4. So I saw the title of your post and said out loud, "Oh no you didn't!" Which made my husband say, "Huh?, What?"

  6. oh, you crack me up! I'm so glad you were able to talk yourself into this it's adorable. I usually spend a lot of time talking myself out of projects like this, even when I have a good idea for the end result. Anyway, you've inspired me. I think next week i'll work on some projects i've been putting off!

    The painted cabinets are a beautiful colour :-) I think crystal knobs would look great.

    {I found two books called Unbroken - which one did you read?}

  13. A couple questions:

    What sort of wax finish did you use?

    Will you be writing on the chalk counters when done or did you choose that paint for the thickness/coverage/some other factor?

    I'm thinking about painting my laminate kitchen countertops and chalk paint is much more appealing to me than the faux granite stuff I've seen. (Also I could write "MY COFFEE" or "MY WINE!!" and a directional arrow in chalk to prevent mixups or have an ongoing shopping list on the backsplash. Functional and fun!)

  16. Oooh, I love it that you did this!! I'll be interested to know how it stands up to kitchen wear and tear...but it looks so great!!!

    It would be easy-peasy to sew a curtain for that area - you just need to sew a hemmed large rectangle and choose a way to hang it!

    Loving your blog - I've followed you!
